Jacob H. Receives a Cool Present
Jacob H. shows us a very nice piece of SURGE history:
As you know, Steak n' Shake sold SURGE. Also, you may know that they always have had those round trays with Coke logos on them. Well, at the Richmond, IN Steak n' Shake (about 45min. from where I live) still uses all the trays from the years they sold SURGE. I was able to get one and here is the story.
I always remembered going to Steak n' Shake with Lou Ann Coleman, my mom, and my brother and seeing the SURGE logos on the bottom of the trays (they would hold them up for us to choose our drinks.) I would always get a SURGE, Root Beer Float, or one of their many Milkshakes.
Well, when SURGE was discontinued, I always wondered if the trays still had the logo. What really made me wonder is they no longer let you see the bottom of the trays. The rare times I'd get to go to Steak n' Shake, I'd try to look under the trays but never could get a good look at them.
Then about a week before Christmas, my mom and I were shopping for our family members. We, as always stopped at Steak n' Shake, and as always I looked. Then right after we ordered a waitress walked by and flipped her tray around, and I saw a red blast with yellow spots around it.
"Mom, there is a SURGE logo under that tray!!!" I startled my mom, but she was actually excited as well.
"Really, I haven't found any SURGE stuff for you yet, I'll try to buy it." Of all the people, I never would expect my mom to do that.
So when our waitress came buy to ask how our meal was I said, "This may seem like a stupid question to you, but I think I see a logo of a soda under that tray..." She cut me off and said, "Yea, I know it's SURGE. I loved that stuff, but we dont sell it any more. I think Burger King does though."
I knew Burger King didn't, but I told her all about SaveSURGE.org and she seemed interested. The lady actually went in the back and got the one with no scratches on the SURGE logo. Well, we found out that trays are 30 bucks old or new, but even though I told her she didn't have to, my mom bought it for me.
Here are some pictures I took of it. As you can see there are cracks all around the corners, and a chip in it. You can't see it in the photos, but there are also places where the big Coke circle in the middle is worn white from handling it so much. Also, on the black, rubber side where they hold the food, there are a couple of orders written in pen. The way I see it, the wear and tear prooves it is authentic.
Great find, Jacob!
