Dear SURGE Fans,

Me at my peak of SURGE enjoyment! Can you believe that it’s been five years since SaveSURGE.org first went online?  While five years may seem like an eternity in today’s world, to me it often seems like the whole thing started only yesterday.

During the past few weeks, I’ve taken some time to look back over some of the faces and events that helped shape our community.  It’s helped me to realize the enormity of what we’ve accomplished together.

I know a lot of these new-fangled “Web 2.0” communities don’t really celebrate their anniversaries like we do.  Maybe they think it’s no big deal or maybe they just don’t keep track of things like this.  For me, February 1st is like an extra holiday (even though I don’t get the day off!).  I feel like it’s so important to look back and recognize how far we’ve all come and just celebrate the fact that we are such a unique community.  Sometimes it’s just nice to sit back and reflect for a little bit.

And so, I’ve been digging through our archives and put together a couple of features that I hope you’ll enjoy reminiscing over:

  • An interactive timeline that lists many of our most notable events.  Most all of the items in the timeline are linked up so that you can go back and relive the moments.

  • A slideshow, available in both Flash and as a downloadable .exe file.  It features some of the most memorable pictures and quotes from our community.  As a bonus, the downloadable .exe version has a soundtrack featuring some of the best songs submitted to us over the years.

The only problem I had with these projects is that I know I’ve left some great people and events out.  The more I got into this, the more I realized that I could literally spend weeks trying to feature everyone and everything.  There were whole sections of the site I didn’t get to feature.

On the bright side, all of that content is just a click away.  So, if you have a spare moment (or a spare weekend), feel free to browse around and find something that you might not have seen in awhile or maybe never saw at all.

Lastly, I want to thank each and every one of you for all that you have done to make this community work.  For five years, you have continued to amaze Avery & I as you showed dedication, creativity and an unwavering belief in what we have done.

Again, I feel like I’m running out of space.  There are so many people to thank and so many accomplishments to list.  But you all know what you did.  You know that Vault exists due to your hard work.  I know that the life-changing experiences I’ve had because of SaveSURGE.org are a direct result of your passion.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.  Now, crack open an ice-cold citrus beverage and give yourself a pat on the back – you deserve it!

Sincerely,

Eric Karkovack
