Puckdropper's SURGE Presentation
In honor of National SaveSURGE Month, SaveSURGE.org Hall of Famer Puckdropper decided to do a project for his professional communications class about the soda he loves. What a great way to spread the word! He was kind enough to provide us with an outline of his planned presentation. Due to time restrictions in his class, he was unable to use all of the information he had available to him.
For a professional communications class, we had to do a 4-6 minute informative speech. I did mine on Surge and SaveSURGE.org following the outline below. I'd say it went fairly well, but I had way more information in the outline than I needed. I could probably have gone 20 minutes on this, and then finally had to scratch the depths of SaveSURGE.org, the links to petitions, The Hall of Fame, the message board, etc...
I stated the mission of SaveSURGE.org in one sentance: To bring back Surge in a form we can go to the store and buy. The big shocker was how much the 12 packs were going for. Just mentioning the LOW value surprised almost everyone. (Actually, it sorta surpised me too when I heard about it.) After the speech was done, I passed out the SaveSURGE business cards, so there's no "I forgot the site" or "where was the site located" later.
Here's the outline I planned to follow: (But didn't.)
Surge
1. What is wrong with this can?
a. it's empty, and there's no more
2. Why is the can empty with no more cans to be found?
a. The Saga of Surge (highlights)
i. Coke started producing it in '97, stopped in '02.
ii. Surge was to compete with Mello Yellow, not be “Mountain Dew”
b. Rumors and advertising may have killed Surge
i. Caffeine loaded – More than Pepsi, less than Mt. Dew.
ii. It makes kids hyper – any pop can do that
iii. The kids running through the back yard commercials

c. SaveSURGE month
i. This speech is purposely done during SaveSURGE month
ii. Contact Coke Day – Friday
iii. Pass out fliers, other propaganda – every day
4. Why should Coca-cola listen?
a. An on line survey received 1000 responses in just over a week.
b. Since Surge has been gone, full cans and also 12 packs are going for $50-150 on eBay.
i. Surge items average less than $20, a sharp contrast. (We want Surge!)
c. Now that some of the Surge drinkers have grown up, they can afford to buy Surge.
d. For the Love of Surge
i. Stories, creative items such as songs, memories section
ii. One hundred thirty-one separate items in For the Love of Surge.
5. What you can do to help
a. Go to SaveSURGE.org for tips, phone numbers, fliers, business cards, etc...
