6 Question Interview with Debbie
There are thousands of dedicated SURGE fans out there and we at SaveSURGE.org appreciate every single one of them. Still, once in awhile someone extra special comes along and amazes you with their hard work and dedication. Debbie is one of those rare people. Along with fellow SaveSURGE.org Hall of Famer, Shirley, she spent a lot of money and worked a lot of hours running a SaveSURGE booth at the Country Thunder USA festival held 4/14-17/05 in Florence, AZ. Together, these ladies collected over 1,000 signatures for their SaveSURGE.org Local Petition. Debbie sat down with us to discuss her love for SURGE and her induction in the Hall:
1. What's the best part about being in the SaveSURGE.org Hall of Fame?
I guess just being recognized for something we did. It's the first time I have ever been recognized for doing anything. It just doesnt seem like we did that much.
2. What makes SURGE your favorite soda?
My best friend Shirley loves it. Green is my favorite color too. Seriously I like the taste. Surge doesn't have an after taste like some sodas have, and it has more flavor than other citrus sodas.
3. What made you decide to rent a booth at Country Thunder USA and collect signatures for your SaveSURGE.org Local Petition?
We wanted to do something to help bring Surge back. Country Thunder was perfect. We knew there would be tons of people daily. Just think of all the signatures we could get. We wanted Coke to see that a lot of people want their favorite soda back. Coke needed to know there are a lot of people who really want their soda back.
4. What was the reaction from people at Country Thunder when they saw your Save SURGE booth?
Awesome. Lots of them did double takes at our banner. They would walk by reading all of it then turn around and come back to see if we had some. Some couldn't run to us fast enough. I wished we had my video camera. Most had questions about what happened to it. All were glad to hear somebody was doing something to bring Surge back. They also were glad to hear about your website too. It was so cool talking with other Surge fans. Some shared their memories of Surge with us. College days and finals were a big topic.
5. Are you surprised by the attention you have received for your work at Country Thunder?
Yes, I really am surprised. It totally blew me away when I saw the first link to CT on the website. It was then that I thought "Whoa this is bigger than we could ever imagine". I think we were both hoping Coke would visit our booth and tell us Surge is Coming back.
6. Describe how you felt when you realized that SURGE was no longer available in bottles and cans.
I was so bummed. More so for Shirley than myself. She is the SURGE! Shirley and I had found Surge in cans in a grocery store in Flagstaff. That was in 2001. We only bought a 12pk thinking we could find more. Then Mom found it in a truck stop soda fountain in Quartzite, AZ. Then we accidently found it in Kingman, AZ at a Kmart. We even drove to Douglas, AZ after my neice told us she saw it there in a fountain. We sure wished we would have filled 100 2 liter bottles then.
7. How did you feel when you found out that SaveSURGE.org was trying to bring it back?
How cool is that, other people who want to bring back Surge. I never imagined finding a website dedicated to a soda. Now it is a daily ritual when I get home from work. I have to read the latest. I know that one day the greatest announcement will be plastered on the home page SURGE IS COMING BACK!!!
